Fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.”

Julia Layton: “Fear is a chain reaction in the brain that starts with a stressful stimulus and ends with the release of chemicals that cause a racing heart, fast breathing and energized muscles, among other things, also known as the fight-or-flight response.”

Quotes from people I interviewed for primary research:
“If you show my mother a photo of a snake, she will run out of the room screaming”
“I took my friend, who has a fear elevators, on an elevator, he got over the fear”
“To overcome my fear of heights, I did a bungee jump”
“I’ve always been shy since I was a kid and I think that was because I’ve always had a fear of being judged by other people/being rejected. It stopped me from being myself, pursuing friendships and other opportunities”

There are many different treatments available to overcome fear, according to Martin and Swinson (2000) and Encyclopaedia (2003) including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Group Therapy and Medication.

Whilst creating the food artefact, I found mind mapping very useful, therefore used the concept to show my research, thoughts, inspiration and ideas for the fear artefact too.

I have created a mood board showcasing photographs of fear, which I had found online while researching Fear Photohraphy. This developed my knowledge on the style and genre of Fear Photography. I have learnt that the majority of fear photographs are dark or black and white connoting negativity.

Marie Concilus (N.D) is a Photographer who has inspired my Fear Photography. She also has a  Fear Photography photographs. I have included some of her photographs within the mood board.
